The Polish Diabetes Association received a Direct Relief grant to support Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes in Poland

20 July 2022

The Polish Diabetes Association (Polskie Stowarzyszenie Diabetyków) has been awarded a $100,000 grant by the humanitarian aid organisation Direct Relief to implement a programme aimed at providing financial support to Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes in Poland.

With this grant, the Polish Diabetes Association has been able to arrange and purchase 525 vouchers for pharmacies and 525 vouchers for grocery stores worth 400 PLN each. Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes, can apply for the programme at one of the Association’s branches throughout the country. There, they will receive the two vouchers (one per type) which can be used for multiple purchases at pharmacies and grocery stores until the total amount of 400 PLN per voucher is spent. Children living with diabetes are also entitled to receive the vouchers which can be requested and collected by a parent or guardian. Each Association’s branch can distribute a maximum of 8 pairs of vouchers (one pair per refugee).

The programme has now been running for two weeks, and during the first week, the Polish Diabetes Association managed to distribute half of the total amount of available vouchers.

Thanks to this programme, Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes in Poland can have better access to medications, supplies, and food which are essential for optimal diabetes management.

We express our gratitude to Direct Relief for awarding the grant, and to the Polish Diabetes Association for setting up the programme and for providing continuous support to Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes during these challenging times.

As the situation evolves, we will continue working with Direct Relief, our Member Associations and partners to provide additional support to people living with diabetes affected by the war.
