Mellissa Goodman

YLD Trainee 2020-2021

I am 22 years of age. I was born on the 26th of May, 1997. I have been living with diabetes for the past 6 years. Before I was diagnosed with diabetes I was eating my vegetables, playing basketball for my country, playing netball and being a model. After my diagnosis I was in disbelief, I thought that I was doing everything right. I started praying to God, asking Him why me? I didn't know that he had something great instore for me. Living with this chronic disease is very hard, I am not going to say it’s easy because it isn’t. Diabetes has shaped me and given me strength that I never had before.
I have been to Vacouver Canada for The Diabetes Association of Barbados. It was the most amazing experience to be a representative for my association, getting to know people from all over the world living with the same chronic disease as I am.
I am an advocate for my association and people living with diabetes in my country. I am doing this to be a voice for people who are scared to speak up.
