Main Focus

Promoting care and prevention of diabetes and its complications through education is our main focus. ADU provides education to all diabetes stakeholders. The role of the association is to promote good health, diabetes education, prevent diabetes and its complications, and raise public awareness about the disease and influence governments.

World Diabetes Day

In 2013, the first objective of the Alliance "Step by diabetes" was prevention and care of diabetes in children and adolescents through an information and education programme.
Blood glucose checks were conducted and information was offered about the importance of exercise. In particular, two campaigns were launched:

  1. Activities in collaboration with Lions Club to fund information and education projects for children and adolescents with diabetes (Aducamp, Adueduca, education groups and family sessions).
  2. First identification programme in Uruguay of children and adolescents with diabetes. The result of this initiative will tell us where, what, why, how and for who we will be developing our projects.
Other activities:

1. 16,000 free glycaemia controls
2. Public awareness campaign on the importance of exercise for the prevention and care of diabetes (300,000 leaflets, 6,000 posters, street messages, video of the campaign).

ADU have organize camps for children and preadolescents with type 1 diabetes from the association where children can learn, having fun, playing and sharing; generating among themselves independence, security and responsibility.

Message from the President

Mr Gabriel Retamoso "As an IDF Member Association we try to collaborate with our work with the objectives and policies for education and prevention of diabetes suggested by the International Diabetes Federation.
We are a small country but with a big present and past. We have many important health and diabetes related professionals who have dedicated their life to people with diabetes.
For them, we must always keep this vocation and work towards more achievements in order to put a halt the diabetes epidemic and improve the quality of life of those who already have diabetes in Uruguay".
