About

Since 1967 the Diabetes Ireland has been dedicated to helping people with diabetes from the very young to the very old. Through its network of support branches throughout the country, people who have an interest in diabetes are dedicated to sourcing and sharing information on diabetes and related matters.

Diabetes Ireland provides a wide array of services which cover all aspects of the condition under the key organisation’s pillars of Education, Support/Care, Awareness and Research.

Diabetes Ireland has 3 office locations (Dublin, Sligo and Cork) and 29 local branches (support groups) nationwide. The organisation has 13 employees located in the 3 offices / regionally and a further 11 medical professional based nationwide (Funded by HSE due to moratorium on HSE hiring). The organisation has approximately 200 volunteers.

Mission

To provide a quality service in improving the lives of people affected by diabetes, and working with others to prevent and cure diabetes.

Main Focus

  • To provide support, information and motivation for people with diabetes, their families and friends
  • To raise awareness of diabetes in the community and foster programs for early detection and prevention of diabetes
  • To support and encourage advances in diabetes care and research.

Activities

To cater for people of all ages, their families and carers, Diabetes Ireland offers a range of services which include:

  • Patient Support through its telephone local helpline and local support branches.
  • Information via leaflets, information packs, website, “Diabetes Ireland” magazine.
  • Support for children and parents with diabetes through the Sweetpea Kidz Club; children and adolescent adventure camps, family weekends, parent support groups.
  • Direct health education for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • CODE (Community Orientated Diabetes Education) programmes nationwide.
  • Financial services; negotiated motor and health insurance rates.
  • Professional support: major annual multi-disciplinary conferences, regional professional meetings, practice support packs and Diabetes Professional magazine.
  • National & local public awareness campaigns.
  • Health Promotion initiative including schools awareness, workplace awareness, early detection and prevention initiatives, diabetes screening.
  • Funds research through the Diabetes Ireland Research Alliance;
    Diabetes Ireland Care Centre.
