This year, Diabetes Liga hosted its annual youth camp in St. Vith, east Belgium, between July, 10 and July, 18.
A group of 76 young people living with diabetes participated in the camp as well as 10 animators and 8 healthcare professionals (some of them also living with diabetes). During these eight days, the adolescents went swimming, mountain biking, played soccer, sang and danced, and spent fake money at the camp casino. The healthcare professionals were always around to help the participants with their diabetes management.
The camp provided youths with a safe environment to enjoy a full range of summer camp activities, including many which they would not usually feel comfortable engaging without qualified medical supervision. The camp was also a great opportunity for the young people to gain more “hands-on” understanding of their diabetes and for educators to gain further experience and practice their skills.
Melissa, one of the animators, reported that the bad weather did not bother them at all and they all had the time of their lives.
