The European Council cuts on health & research

23 July 2020

IDF Europe deeply regrets severe cuts have been made on research and health during the conclusions of almost five days of negotiations of the European Council (EUCO 10/20).

These cuts do not respect the Commission’s key policy priorities given in May to build a strong and resilient European health sector. The Horizon Europe Research Programme has been massively reduced from €13.5 to €5 billion whereas the EU4Health Programme was cut down to €1.67 billion, from €9.4 billion proposed in May by the Commission. Both of these programmes, which were crucial to support resilient health care systems and to bring out the voices of the most vulnerable during the context of a global pandemic, are amongst the most affected by funding restrictions.
