The Polish Diabetes Association (Polskie Stowarzyszenie Diabetyków) was awarded a €50,000 grant by Boehringer Ingelheim to support Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes in Poland.

With this grant, the Polish Diabetes Association was able to arrange and purchase grocery stores vouchers worth 400 PLN (€84) each. The vouchers will be distributed to Ukrainian people living with diabetes (PwD) by the association’s branches participating in the programme. The vouchers can be used for multiple purchases at grocery stores until the total amount of 400 PLN per voucher is spent. Ukrainian PwD, including children, are entitled to receive one voucher per person.

This initiative follows up on the programme implemented last summer by the association with a grant received by the humanitarian aid organisation Direct Relief to support Ukrainian refugees’ expenses at pharmacies and grocery stores.

Michal ÄŒuha, General Manager of Boehringer Ingelheim in Poland, commented: “We are glad to be providing funds to support Ukrainian citizens who are facing challenges due to ongoing conflict in Ukraine. I hope that this will help PwD get access to quality food which is crucial for the management of their condition”.

Anna ÅšliwiÅ„ska, President of the Polish Diabetes Association, explained: “This humanitarian grant will allow us to continue implementing our programme in support of Ukrainian PwD. We are very pleased to see another partner joining our support programme and donating funds for vouchers to secure the basic needs of PwD from Ukraine. We thank Boehringer Ingelheim for the donation”.

PwD are particularly vulnerable to the disruptions caused by humanitarian crises. Access to health services, diabetes medicines and devices is crucial as is access to quality food for achieving optimal diabetes management and prevent diabetes-related complications.

We commend the Polish Diabetes Association for the continuous support they have been providing to Ukrainian refugees living with diabetes during the past year.
