The Slovakian Diabetes Society (Slovenská diabetologická spoločnosť – SDS) is a voluntary civil association of health care professionals whom are for diabetes mellitus missions established in 1968 by prof. MUDr. Rudolf Korec, DrSc. It is a collective member of the Slovak Medical Association and a full member of the International Diabetes Federation since 3 May 1993. The forms of membership are full and honorary.
To secure funding, political support and full realization of new version of National Diabetes Programme of the Slovak Republic, continue specialization in field of diabetology, metabolic disorders and nutritions, prepare consensuses, publications, professional journals and recommendations about screening, optimal control and treatment of diabetes mellitus and acute and chronic complications.
To inform about right and responsibilities of diabetic patients and health care professionals, protect the rights of diabetic patients as a patients, consumers and citizens.
To improve educating diabetic patients, family members, health care professionals and risk groups.
To act as effective promoter of modern diabetology, prevention of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrom, obesity, acute, chronic, economical, social and societal complications.

Special education and screening programmes for diabetic patients and public (from 1991)
Project Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and Metabolic Syndrome in Slovak Republic confirmed 7 % prevalence of diabetes mellitus and 20 % prevalence of metabolic syndrom in whole Slovakia (Diabetes Res Clin Pract. 2008 Aug, 81(2):238-42)
