Hellenic Diabetes Federation: diabetes awareness and education initiatives

29 November 2025

The Hellenic Diabetes Federation (ELODI) continues to advance diabetes education and awareness in Greece through a series of initiatives in 2025. Building on its longstanding commitment to supporting people living with diabetes (PwD) and healthcare professionals (HCPs), ELODI has focused on promoting active lifestyles and peer support, and raising awareness of diabetes within the wider population.

“Blue on Sail” – diabetes awareness through sailing

In August 2025, ELODI launched the “Blue on Sail” initiative, a public awareness and educational project combining diabetes education with the values of teamwork, endurance and freedom inspired by sailing. The pilot activity took place on August 31, with nine young adults living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) embarking on a one-day sailing trip from Lefkada to Meganisi and back, guided by a professional skipper and an instructor. In collaboration with the Sailing Club of Lefkada, participants took part in interactive sessions on managing diabetes at sea while enjoying the sport and building connections. Supported by diabetes-focused companies, this first voyage marked an important step in the ELODI’s mission to encourage active living, foster peer support and raise awareness of the experiences of PwD.

“Champions in action – diabetes without limits”

ELODI’s “Champions in action – diabetes without limits” campaign showcases the achievements of athletes living with T1D across a range of sport disciplines. Through interviews, podcasts and social media storytelling, the campaign highlights inspiring personal journeys and demonstrates that diabetes does not limit human potential. The first featured athlete was Viktoria Lapikof, followed by others competing in boxing, rowing and team sports. By sharing these stories, ELODI aims to promote visibility, support newly diagnosed individuals and strengthen public understanding of diabetes self-management in the context of athletic performance.

Awareness campaign on cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases

Recognising the importance of early detection of diabetes and comprehensive care, ELODI launched a nationwide public awareness campaign focusing on diabetes-related comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases. The initiative featured educational podcasts, short video interviews with people with lived experience and medical experts, and live webinars led by nephrologists, cardiologists and dietitians. All content was shared via the ELODIs official website and social media channels, reaching people living with chronic conditions, caregivers and HCPs across Greece and raising awareness of prevention, early diagnosis and comprehensive diabetes care.

Educational materials

Throughout 2025, ELODI’s developed a series of printed and digital leaflets covering key topics such as obesity and diabetes management. These materials were distributed at clinics, public events and educational sessions. The association also provided community engagement through online resources, podcasts and health webinars, ensuring accessible information for all PwD.

Through these initiatives, the Hellenic Diabetes Federation continues to champion education, inclusion and empowerment, ensuring that PwD have the knowledge, tools and support to lead active and healthy lives.
