During the 2026 Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes Conference (ATTD), our Board Member, Dr. Sufyan Hussain, officially launched a new publication supported and facilitated by IDF Europe: “An international consensus on screening and monitoring early-stage type 1 diabetes: a roadmap to European implementation”.
The publication brings together leading international experts to review the latest evidence on early screening for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and set out policy recommendations for implementing screening programmes across Europe. The paper highlights the growing need for earlier identification of the disease, particularly as incidence continues to rise and around 40–42% of children and adolescents present with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at diagnosis, a potentially life-threatening complication.
With new disease-modifying therapies emerging, early identification of T1D is becoming increasingly important for prevention, care and long-term outcomes. As the evidence supporting screening continues to grow, the publication outlines key steps for policymakers and health systems to help ensure they are prepared to implement screening programmes and provide appropriate monitoring and support for individuals who screen positive and their families.
