It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bastian, a cherished member of the IDF Europe family, whose impact on our organisation and the wider diabetes community will be felt for years to come.
Bastian’s journey with IDF Europe spans more than a decade. In 2016, he was recognised with the IDF Europe Social Media Award, a reflection of his exceptional ability to connect people, amplify the voice of people with lived experience, and foster meaningful dialogue across the diabetes community. What began as a collaboration following that award soon grew into a lasting partnership built on shared values, mutual respect, and a common commitment to improving the lives of people living with diabetes.
Bastian went on to serve two terms on the IDF Europe Board, where he brought not only strategic insight and unwavering dedication, but also warmth, positivity, and a unique ability to bring people together. Following his Board service, he continued to support the organisation as an Advisor to the Board, generously sharing his expertise, experience, and perspective whenever needed.
Throughout these years, Bastian embodied the true meaning of community. He believed deeply in the power of connection, inclusion, and paying it forward. Whether advocating for people with diabetes, mentoring others, or helping colleagues navigate challenges, he always found ways to make those around him feel heard, valued, and supported.
For many of us, however, Bastian was much more than a colleague, Board member, or advisor. Over the years, our professional collaboration evolved into genuine friendship. Members of the Board, the IDF Europe team, and countless partners across the diabetes community had the privilege of experiencing his kindness, generosity, humour, and unwavering support firsthand.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. His contributions helped shape IDF Europe, strengthen our community, and inspire a generation of advocates. Most importantly, he reminded us that lasting change is built on human connection.
Our thoughts are with Bastian’s family, loved ones, colleagues, and the entire #dedoc community during this difficult time. We are grateful for the time we shared with him, for all that he gave to our organisation, and for the friendship he offered so freely.
We will miss you dearly, Bastian. We will continue to carry forward the spirit of community, generosity, and collaboration that you lived every day. It is the least we can do to “pay it forward”—just as you always encouraged us to do.
