The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Stela Prgomelja, a dedicated advocate for people living with diabetes in Serbia and beyond and one of the first members of the IDF Blue Circle Voices (BCV) network.
We join the Diabetes Association of Serbia, her family, friends, colleagues and the wider diabetes community in mourning her loss and honouring her remarkable life and legacy.
Stela lived with type 1 diabetes from childhood and often spoke about how the condition shaped her determination to advocate for improving the lives of people living with diabetes and preventing diabetes in those at risk. Even while living with multiple complications, she remained a powerful voice for person-centred care, insisting that every person should have access to the education, treatment and support that best suits their individual needs.
A highly active member of the BCV community, Stela contributed her lived experience, knowledge and warmth to IDF advocacy, including as a speaker at several online and in-person events. Her message was consistent and deeply personal: many complications can be prevented when people have the right information, access to appropriate care and the opportunity to work in partnership with governments and healthcare professionals.
In Serbia and throughout the IDF European region, Stela was widely recognised as a source of support, understanding and encouragement. Through decades of work, she educated generations of children, young people, parents and adults with diabetes. As the author of My Pocket Pancreas, she helped many people better understand daily life with diabetes. In 1997, she founded one of the first diabetes websites in the region, creating an early space for information, education and community.
IDF extends its heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved Stela. Her courage, kindness and unstoppable commitment to diabetes advocacy will continue to inspire our community.
