The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) School of Diabetes platform has launched a new free online course designed to help healthcare professionals strengthen the management of type 2 diabetes. The course – Management Strategies for Type 2 Diabetes – General Practitioners – provides practical guidance on blood glucose monitoring, glycaemic control and strategies to minimise the risk of low hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose).
Type 2 diabetes remains a major global health challenge, affecting over 90% of the 589 million adults estimated to be living with diabetes globally. Effective blood glucose monitoring underpins reduction of the risk of long-term complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage and vision loss.
At the same time, healthcare professionals must consider the risk of hypoglycaemia, which can affect well-being and following treatment plans. The new course examines approaches that help clinicians achieve glycaemic targets without increasing the likelihood of hypoglycaemic episodes.
What the course covers
The course is designed for medical doctors, including general practitioners and primary care physicians involved in diabetes care.
It consists of two educational modules designed to help healthcare professionals strengthen their understanding of type 2 diabetes management and treatment strategies.
- Module 1 covers the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and the principles of balanced disease management.
- Module 2 focuses on basal insulin therapy and its role in achieving glycaemic control while reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia.
Developed by international experts, the course is based on current evidence and best practice. To improve accessibility, it includes voiceovers and subtitles in English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Turkish.
Learners complete both an initial and final self-assessment to evaluate their learning. Those who successfully complete the course receive an official IDF Certificate. The programme is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®), enabling learners to earn two European CME (ECMEC®) credits.
The course was developed with the support of Sanofi’s Global Health Unit (GHU).
