Tianjin Medical University Chu Hsien-I Memorial Hospital (also known as the “Metabolic Diseases Hospital”), founded in 1998, is China’s first modern Grade III Level A specialised hospital dedicated to the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, including diabetes and its complications. In 2019, the hospital expanded into a general hospital, to deliver high-quality diagnosis and treatment, advanced health management and disease prevention, innovative scientific research and translational research, and rigorous medical education.
Named in honour of Professor Chu Hsien-I, the founding president of Tianjin Medical University, the hospital covers a land area of 65,000 square metres and a total floor area of 120,000 square metres. The hospital currently has 545 open beds, with a total designed bed capacity of 1,200.
As a national leader in the field, the hospital’s core strengths lie in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine and metabolic diseases. In 2021, the hospital was designated as a sub-centre of the National Clinical Medical Research Centre for Metabolic Diseases. The hospital has 30 clinical departments, including the Diabetic Podiatry Department, Nephrology Department, Endocrinology Department, Cardiovascular Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, and Ophthalmology Department.
The hospital has also developed an integrated diabetes care approach by establishing specialised clinics that provide patients with comprehensive, personalised medical services and health education. This approach effectively improves glycaemic control and enhances patients’ quality of life.
