Hello! I’m Bastijn de Ruijter from Australia. I’m a Psychology student in my final year of university and an ambassador for Diabetes Australia. My journey as a person living with type 1 diabetes has profoundly shaped how I view this condition. It’s not just a physical illness—it affects every part of life, including emotional and mental well-being.

In Australia, an estimated 1.7 million people are living with diabetes. Among them, over 14,000 children and adolescents live with type 1 diabetes. Raising awareness and improving understanding of the condition is essential—especially in supporting the mental health of those affected.

As part of the Young Leaders in Diabetes programme, I aim to amplify diabetes awareness across Australia. My studies in psychology have deepened my understanding of how mental health and diabetes management are closely connected. I believe holistic care is key to better outcomes.

Outside of academics and advocacy, I enjoy outdoor activities like soccer and running, and recently tried rowing for the first time. These experiences remind me that diabetes should never be a barrier to living an active, fulfilling life.
