Hello! I’m Joana Amorim from Portugal.  My journey with type 1 diabetes began six years ago. At first, I felt isolated and tried to hide my condition, wishing I could live freely like other teenagers. Over time—through both literal and emotional highs and lows—I learned to face diabetes with resilience and gratitude. Now I am starting my journey as a diabetes advocate.
In Portugal, an estimated 1.1 million people are living with diabetes. Among them, around 3,600 children and adolescents live with type 1 diabetes. Through advocacy and connection, we can help ensure no one faces this condition alone.
Being part of the Young Leaders in Diabetes programme 2024 was a turning point. I could raise awareness, challenge stigma and support other young people by using my skills and studies. Working alongside youth from 25 countries was empowering and introduced me to leadership and advocacy. For the first time, I felt a sense of belonging.Â
As a Young Leader in Diabetes, I am committed to creating a space where young people feel included, valued and understood. Diabetes doesn’t have to hold us back. Together, we can build a stronger and more supportive community.
