Hello! I’m Mariyam Nafha from the Maldives. I’m 26 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 17—an experience that completely changed my life and sparked my passion for advocacy. I now work full-time as a documentation specialist on the National Single Window project at Tradenet, and in my free time, I dedicate myself to raising awareness about diabetes.
In the Maldives, an estimated 40,000 people are living with diabetes. Among them, over 110 children and adolescents live with type 1 diabetes. Education and open conversation are key to reducing stigma and helping people better understand the condition.
Through the Diabetes Society of Maldives, I participate in screening and awareness projects, with a strong focus on education. One of my goals is to conduct sessions in schools to share my journey and help students understand what it means to live with diabetes. I believe that sharing personal experiences is a powerful way to build empathy and encourage others to take charge of their health.
As a Young Leader in Diabetes, I hope to foster a more supportive environment for people living with diabetes—where compassion, knowledge, and community make all the difference.
