Diego Bartra Bazán (Peru)

Hello, I’m Diego from Peru. I’ve been living with type 1 diabetes since 2010. For years, I’ve worn the “Act on Diabetes. Now.” bracelet as a daily reminder of the promise we’ve made to push for change. This bracelet came to me through the support of the International Diabetes Federation, which helped my association strengthen our efforts on World Diabetes Day.

I  joined Blue Circle Voices to shine a light on the barriers people in Peru face—barriers that often place us behind not only high-income countries but even our neighbours in Latin America. Over 35 million people are living with diabetes in the SACA region. In Peru, about 1.3 million people live with diabetes,  and 4,063, to be exact, are children and adolescents under 19 who are living with type 1 diabetes.

Access to innovation, diabetes education and public policies is far too limited. Here, managing diabetes is an uphill battle. I’m here to change that and to make sure these challenges are recognised globally.
