Isabella Magee (Australia)

Author: Isabella Magee

Hello! I’m Isabella Magee from Australia. After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I spent years struggling to come to terms with my condition. I was rebellious, refused to manage my health properly, and often felt alone and misunderstood. Looking back, I wish I’d had more support and access to diabetes education during those early years.

As a Young Leader in Diabetes, my mission is to use my voice to remove stigma, provide knowledge, and empower people living with diabetes. In Australia, an estimated 1.7 million people are living with diabetes. Among them, over 14,000 children and adolescents live with type 1 diabetes. Education, community, and open dialogue are essential to breaking stigma and improving lives.

With a background in journalism and production, I’m passionate about storytelling and using media to raise awareness and drive change. I’m currently returning to university to complete a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours), which will give me the evidence-based insights I need to advocate more effectively.

Remaining connected with the diabetes community—through social media, podcasting, and advocacy—reminds me I’m not alone. The challenges that come with diabetes are real, and they’re shared. Together, we can create a more supportive, informed, and empowered future.
