It is with deep sadness and regret that the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) announces the passing of its Honorary President, Professor Jakob Anton “Jak” Jervell.
Professor Jervell, Jak to the many who knew him, served as IDF President-elect from 1991 to 1994 and as the organisation’s President from 1994 to 1997. He will be remembered for his tireless work to improve diabetes treatment and self-management, not only in Norway but around the world. He championed the cause of diabetes education. He was well-liked and respected throughout the world by his colleagues, peers in the diabetes community and by the many who benefitted from his knowledge and guidance.
Throughout his long and illlustrious career, Professor Jervell held many positions, including that of assistant doctor, reserve doctor, chief physician and professor of endocrinology at Rikshospitalet and the University of Oslo. After a number of years as a medical adviser to the Norwegian Diabetes Association, he was appointed an honorary member in 1997 and played an active role at the Norwegian Diabetes Centre.
As one of Norway’s foremost experts on diabetes, Professor Jervell was a true driving force in the fight to ensure that everyone with diabetes receives the best possible treatment. Thanks to his work, many children, young people and adults have gained inspiration and confidence in their diabetes management.
In 2009, Professor Jervell was made a Knight of the 1st class of the Order of St. Olav by Norway’s King Harald for his efforts in the field of diabetes care, with particular emphasis on his work in clinical treatment, research and teaching and in recognition of his work around the world.
The global diabetes community must say goodbye to one of its greatest leaders. IDF extends its deepest condolences to Professor Jervell’s family and friends at this time of sadness.
