The International Diabetes Federation is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Richmond Asante Bamfo – a member of the IDF Young Leaders in Diabetes (YLD) programme from Ghana.
Richmond was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2003 when he was eight. In 2012, he began collaborating with his diabetes association, the National Diabetes Association of Ghana. Two years later, he joined the NDA Ghana’s youth leadership programme, contributing to many activities, including the local Youth Diabetes Camps.
When he joined the IDF YLD programme in 2019, he came highly recommended by NDA Ghana. As a YLD advocate, he was an active team member and incredibly eager to learn about diabetes management and how to combat the stigma children living with diabetes often face in Ghana.
Richmond was a source of inspiration for his peers in Ghana and everyone who met him. He will remain in the hearts and minds of the IDF team and the Young Leaders in Diabetes as we continue to advocate for improved access to diabetes care across the world.
