About
Founded in 1998 and located in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul), the Instituto da Criança com Diabetes (ICD) provides free care for more than 4,800 children and young people with type 1 diabetes.
ICD’s work is focused on preventing complications resulting from diabetes through education, access to treatment, new technologies and extensive social assistance for family members and/or carers, who also need to be involved in their children’s treatment. Interdisciplinary care is provided by a team made up of endocrinologists, nephrologists, ophthalmologists, psychiatrists, nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, dentists, social workers and physical educators.
Main Focus
On a daily basis, the ICD interdisciplinary team addresses the various aspects of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of complications of type 1 diabetes for those affected, their families and carers, in outpatient consultations and at the Day Hospital.
Throughout the year, people with type 1 diabetes receive guidance on:
- Hypoglycaemia
- Oral health
- Insulin delivery
- Diet and carbohydrate concentration
- Diabetes at school, at work and in special situations
- Insulin pump therapy
- Myths and misconceptions about type 1 diabetes
- New technologies and treatments
- Self-monitoring
- How to deal with diabetes when you have other conditions
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- The importance of physical activity
- The mental health impact of living with type 1 diabetes
The aim is to increase knowledge about the condition and make those involved more adherent to treatment.
ICD also offers a Compact Type 1 Diabetes Education Programme, made up of 14 video lessons recorded by the ICD medical and technical team. The programme aims to bring type 1 diabetes education to places where there are no diabetes education programmes.
