About

Federación Mexicana de Diabetes (FMD) was established in Nuevo León, Monterrey in 1988.

FMD is a civil association that represents the interests of people with diabetes. It has affiliates in different locations in Mexico, where care and support is provided for people with diabetes. To accomplish this, we gather a group of people who live with diabetes and those who are linked to it directly or indirectly, such as physicians, health professionals, family and anyone who is interested in the topic.

By creating public awareness about diabetes, we strengthen knowledge about diabetes which facilitates early diagnosis and support for people living with the condition. This also reduces the risk of developing short and long-term complications.

For decades, the main focus of the work of FMD and its affiliates has been providing diabetes education for people with diabetes and their families. Thanks to these efforts, diabetes education is advancing rapidly in Mexico.

Main Focus

To promote diabetes education aimed at people with diabetes, the general population and health professionals, to ensure timely diagnosis, prevent new cases and complications of the condition.

Activities

FMD provides care through four fundamental programs:

  • Network of associations: networking with 20 associations that provide direct care or support to people with diabetes.
  • Diabetes education: training in various formats to promote diabetes education to help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, ensure timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment for all types of diabetes. This programme includes a number of activities: course for diabetes educators, course for people with diabetes and families, seminars, Facebook live events and biennial National Congress.
  • Raising community awareness: We do this through awareness campaigns to disseminate relevant information and promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Life for a Child: an international programme with a presence in Mexico that supports 1,100 children aged 2 to 23 with type 1 diabetes who live in vulnerable situations.
