12 May 2026

It is with great sadness and regret that the International Diabetes Federation has learnt of the passing of Anne Marie Felton, a former Vice President and long-serving volunteer with the Federation.

For more than three decades, Anne Marie dedicated her efforts to advancing diabetes education and improving care for people living with diabetes in the United Kingdom, across Europe and beyond.

As a diabetes specialist nurse, Anne Marie championed education, professional collaboration and excellence in care for people living with diabetes. Through her vision, leadership and unwavering commitment, she helped shape and elevate the role of diabetes nurses across the world, inspiring generations of healthcare professionals. She was a founding member and President of the Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND).

Anne Marie was actively involved with IDF, both in Europe and globally. She was notably a member of the IDF Consultative Section on Diabetes Education, on the steering group for the Unite for Diabetes campaign that resulted in the passage of the United Nations Resolution on diabetes in December 2006, Chair of the Organising Committee for the World Diabetes Congress in 2013 and 2015 and co-Chair of the joint IDF Europe/FEND project to establish a European framework for diabetes in association with the European Commission. From 2009 to 2012, she served on the IDF Board as a Vice President.

Her influence was far reaching and she leaves an enduring legacy within the global diabetes community and among the countless people whose lives she touched throughout her distinguished career.

Anne Marie will be sorely missed and remembered with deep respect, gratitude and admiration for her extraordinary contribution and lifelong dedication to furthering diabetes education.

IDF extends its most heartfelt condolences to Anne Marie’s family and friends at this time of sadness.
