On Monday, 10 August, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, with tremors felt across the country and in neighbouring countries, including Ecuador and Panama. The earthquake has caused loss of life, injuries and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, with several areas in western Colombia severely affected. The country has declared a national emergency and search and rescue operations are ongoing as the full extent of the impact continues to emerge.
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) extends its deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this disaster and is particularly concerned about the impact of the earthquake on the estimated 3 million people living with diabetes in Colombia.
People living with chronic conditions such as diabetes can be especially vulnerable during humanitarian emergencies, when disruption to healthcare services, displacement and damage to infrastructure can interrupt access to essential medicines, supplies and care.
IDF and its South and Central America (SACA) Region are in contact with members and partners in the country to help ensure that diabetes medicines and supplies remain available and accessible to people living with diabetes during this difficult time.
- IDF transnational member Direct Relief is assessing immediate health requests and maintains emergency medical supplies commonly needed after earthquakes, including wound care materials, surgical supplies, antibiotics, and field medic packs for first responders and search-and-rescue teams.
- IDF has compiled a selection of resources to support people with diabetes, healthcare professionals and first responders in times of emergency.
The International Diabetes Federation will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as more information becomes available.
