On January 26 and 27, the 150th session of the WHO Executive Board discussed a report by the Director General on the political declaration of the third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases.
This report includes draft recommendations for Member States, international partners and WHO to strengthen and monitor diabetes responses within national NCD programmes by strengthening national capacity, reducing modifiable risk factors, strengthening health systems through primary healthcare and UHC, supporting high-quality research and monitoring trends and determinants.
The report also includes a proposed set of diabetes coverage targets for achievement by 2030:
- 80% of people with diabetes are diagnosed
- 80% of people with diagnosed diabetes have good control of glycaemia
- 80% of people with diagnosed diabetes have good control of blood pressure
- 60% of people over 40 years old with diabetes receive statins
- 100% of people with type 1 diabetes have access to affordable insulin treatment and blood glucose self-monitoring
While these targets are not flawless and IDF would have liked to see a target on 100% diagnosis of people living with type 1 diabetes, we believe they provide a sufficiently strong direction for Member States to act on diabetes in the coming decade by becoming a core component of the WHO Global Diabetes Compact.
These draft diabetes recommendations and coverage targets will be voted upon at the 75th World Health Assembly (22-28 May, 2022).
