At a ceremony and press conference held in Bangkok, Thailand on July 24th, IDF President Professor Akhtar Hussain, along with IDF member the Diabetes Association of Thailand, represented by its President Prof. Wannee Nitiyanant, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Thailand Exhibition and Convention Bureau announced the success of the bid to bring the international conference to Thailand in April 2025.
Speaking to a full room of journalists, Prof. Hussain expressed his delight that the IDF World Diabetes Congress would be hosted in Thailand: “As we work to achieve the ambitious global diabetes targets agreed by WHO member states, I look forward to welcoming the global diabetes community in Bangkok in April 2025 to respond to the global challenge diabetes now presents. The congress will help foster the collaborations, connections and political actions required to place diabetes at the top of the global health agenda and improve the lives of people living with diabetes and prevent diabetes in those at risk.
Prof. Hussain expressed hope that the Congress in Thailand would inspire change: “The IDF World Diabetes Congress’s provides an ideal forum for the global diabetes community to come together and make the case for diabetes to receive the level of attention, recognition, and resources that, given the impact it has on individuals and their families and the growing pressure it is placing on healthcare resources, the condition demands. I hope that the Congress will leave a legacy that will benefit those affected by diabetes in a region now home to over one in three of all people living with diabetes.”
