About

The Guyana Diabetic Association (GDA) is a volunteer non-profit organisation created in November 1969 by a group of concerned people with diabetes.

Motto

Education, medication and self-management are key to addressing our problems.

Since its inception, GDA has continued to grow, distributing free medication, monitors, strips and education in all parts of Georgetown, with the support of the Ministry of Health, reaching over 1500 people with diabetes.  The Georgetown Public Hospital works with GDA on a daily basis to help their patients with diabetes improve their HBA1c with medication and education.

Main Focus

  • To provide a forum where people with diabetes can air their concerns and offer each other moral, spiritual and emotional support to cope with the condition.
  • To educate its members about matters of a non-technical nature and provide them with skills that can assist them in coping with the condition on a daily basis.

Activities

  • Outreach in rural areas through mining companies.
  • Collaboration with NGOs.
  • Monthly education activities
  • Awareness in media

Message from the President

“As we face the complications of diabetes, our future is no longer dark. It is no longer simply a doctor-led approach to diabetes management. People with diabetes play an integral part in their care. It is so important for people with diabetes to be educated on their condition. As we move to improve diabetes care, it is of utmost importance that this be extended to smaller countries. In Guyana, through collaborations with Insulin for Life USA and Life for a Child, we receive free medical supplies for which we are extremely grateful. We look forward to the day when we can become self sufficient and provide insulin pumps and CGMs for younger people with type 1 diabetes. My goal is to introduce my membership to the best care available in order to achieve a good diabetes life.”
