Launched in 2025, the IDF SACA Diabetes Educator Profile is a regional consensus document that establishes the key roles, essential skills, and ethical principles that guide the work of diabetes educators in the region.

This resource was developed collaboratively by diabetes educators from 19 countries in the region to create a common framework that strengthens diabetes education and professional practice in the diverse contexts of South and Central America.

The framework is organised around four main pillars:

  • Professional competencies (evidence-based clinical and educational knowledge and skills).
  • Educator roles (facilitator, mentor, care coordinator, and liaison with multidisciplinary teams).
  • Essential qualities and skills (empathic communication, person-centered approach, critical thinking, and collaborative work).
  • Ethical principles and standards (confidentiality, respect, equity, and professional responsibility).

To ensure methodological rigor and regional relevance, the process included a review of international literature, consultation with experts, Delphi-type consensus rounds, and focus groups with educators from the region, guaranteeing applicability and adaptation to the context.

The resource is currently available for download in Spanish, with translations in English and Portuguese available soon.
