Stephanie Haack – Germany
Stephanie wished to create a code of ethics specifically for diabetes blogs – first in Germany and then worldwide. The code creates more transparency and certainty for readers who rely on the honest, independent and impartial opinions and reports of diabetes bloggers. In the end, the aim was to increase trust in diabetes blogs and create a more stable and focused blogosphere from which people with diabetes can benefit.
Diabetes blogs provide not only helpful information about diabetes and treatment options, but they especially offer personal experiences of living with diabetes. Reading diabetes blogs can show the reader that they are not alone with their condition, can connect them to others who live with it and help them accept their condition. This is a crucial part of actually living with and treating diabetes successfully.
Since February 2018, the draft content of the codex has been enriched and further developed by research findings. Stephanie gathered feedback about the idea and the content which will be featured in the codex. Additional individuals within the community and supporting the project have also been identified, both at the national and international level. Stephanie had the opportunity to present her ideas at the 54th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Berlin, from the 1st to the 5th of October 2018.
