María Claudia Berghusen Anteparra – Peru
The number Ones consisted of four diabetes workshops, which took place in four different cities in one year. The cities were chosen after Maria Claudia mapped the incidence of Type 1 diabetes in the country.
Each event included two parallel workshops: one for parents and one for people with type 1 diabetes.
The main objective of the programme was to improve the health and quality of life of people living with type 1 diabetes in Peru, by educating them about the disease and creating a support network. In between workshops, close communication were maintained with health centres as well as with people with diabetes and their families through the Young Diabetics Association Facebook page for general counselling, emotional support and inclusion in the diabetes community.
Meetings have been held in Ica, Lima and Chiclayo. They were all attended by children living with T1D and their parents and have been great successes. For instance, the first workshop in Ica (city no. 2) was held on June 30, 2018. Parents and caregivers sat together in a room with a nutritionist, while Maria Claudia took care of the children with type 1 diabetes.
