Maabena Web lives with type 2 diabetes.
Upon visiting the IDF website for the first time, I was completely shocked at the statistics and projections on diabetes for my region (sub-Saharan Africa). I realised that there needed to be more awareness among the general public and I started speaking to people informally about diabetes. The more I talked to them, the more I realised that many people didn’t really know what diabetes entailed, let alone how to prevent or manage it. Having lived in the US for almost two decades, where I benefited so much from the information that had been given to me several times to help take care of myself, especially during the times I had gestational diabetes and subsequently pre-diabetes, I decided that the people in my home country could also benefit from some of this basic information to help them take charge of their health. I therefore decided to go full scale on diabetes awareness, starting in November 2022.
