On 21 September, the United Nations (UN) 2nd High-Level Meeting on universal health coverage (UHC) took place at the UN Headquarters in New York under the theme “Universal Health Coverage: expanding our ambition for health and well-being in a post-COVID world”.
The President of the UN General Assembly convened this meeting to build on the 1st High-Level Meeting from 2019. Member States and civil society had an opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities and reinvigorate progress towards delivering UHC by 2030.
In the meeting, the first discussion panel addressed primary healthcare approaches and the second aligning investments for health and well-being after the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcome was an action-oriented political declaration focusing on creating resilient and equitable health systems with primary health care at the core.

World Diabetes Day call to action
To galvanise efforts to achieve UHC and the World Health Organization (WHO) diabetes coverage targets by 2030, IDF has launched a call to action in the run-up to World Diabetes Day 2023. The global diabetes community is encouraged to send a letter to their national policymakers through our online tool, asking them to dedicate more human and financial resources to help achieve UHC and the global diabetes targets by 2030.
