M.V. Hospital for Diabetes was established by late Prof. M. Viswanathan, Doyen of Diabetology in India in 1954 as a general hospital. In 1971 it became a hospital exclusively for diabetes care. Prof M Viswanathan’s mission is that “Every person with diabetes should be helped to live his normal span of life in a healthy way”.
Prof M Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre was started to promote research in the field of diabetes mellitus. Established in 1972, it was soon recognised as a research institute for undertaking advanced research in diabetes by the Indian Council of Medical Research. In 1983 it was recognised by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi as a research institute. The centre has been in the forefront of clinical and basic research in diabetes in this country.
We have various departments specialized in diabetes care, such as department of primary prevention of diabetes, here we identify high risk individuals and counsel them for lifestyle modification. We also follow them up and screen for diabetes at regular intervals which helps them to prevent or delay the development of diabetes. In the department of Diet and education, individualized diet chart will be prescribed for each patient and insulin techniques will be taught Individual focus will be given for specific conditions. Kidney clinic provides special care and counseling to people with diabetes having declined kidney function and also the family members. Department of Foot care and Podiatry will screen patients for diabetic neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease and educate to prevent diabetic foot ulcers. Department of Psychological counseling and Yoga department help patients to maintain good diabetes control and mental wellbeing. We have sophisticated state of art clinical laboratory to perform all investigations in the field of biochemistry, microbiology, serology, haematology, clinical pathology and molecular genetics.
