As a member of the Blue Circle Voices network and a diabetes advocate, I want to ensure that students with type 1 diabetes can learn in a safe and accepting school environment and receive equal access to education. Parents should not have to endure additional emotional turmoil or expend unnecessary energy to secure the medical presence and support their children need at school.
As the founder of FOLLOWT1Ds, a parent-led advocacy group, I have firsthand experience navigating these barriers in the US. I am eager to use this knowledge to understand how these challenges compare to those in other countries and collaborate with global peers. By joining the BCV network, I aim to share insights on these barriers, learn about different approaches to diabetes care in school settings worldwide and work together to advocate for improvements. I want to address disparities in access to care, improve time in range and long-term health outcomes, and educate parents, healthcare providers and schools on effectively using and embracing these practices. My ultimate goal is to enhance support systems and create a safer and more inclusive environment for all students with type 1 diabetes worldwide.
