For children living with diabetes, the world is an entirely different place. Every aspect of their lives comes with challenges. Using insulin or a glucometer at school, experiencing hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia during class, or similar experiences can lead to discrimination by classmates. Children with diabetes are considered “patients”, different or weird from their peers. School staff usually do not know what to expect from a student with diabetes and are not trained in treating hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia. They may even spoil and pamper a child with diabetes. Most students with diabetes are not allowed to do sports at school since school coaches lack essential information. In some severe cases, parents forbid their child to associate with a classmate with diabetes. Negin and I experienced a similar situation in our childhood, so we decided to take steps to solve it.
