Jyotsana Rangeen – India
My project, IgniteD, is an initiative to use the true force and power of Anganwadi workers who focus on the health and educational needs of underprivileged children in rural areas. The Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) are a part of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme, a centrally sponsored government scheme in India. IgniteD tackles the deeply entrenched stigma surrounding diabetes in rural areas. By educating these workers on type 1 diabetes and management, they can increase community awareness of the condition in India. On average, an Anganwadi worker serves a population of 100-500 people. So, by educating one woman, we can educate the whole tribe to make a difference and bring about much-needed change.
