IDF care and prevention initiatives aim to help stem the ever increasing incidence of type 2 diabetes and promote specific models of care and resources to support optimal management of people with diabetes.
Everyone with diabetes is at risk of losing vision. Good control of blood glucose, blood pressure and blood lipids as well as timely treatment can reduce the incidence of eye disease and vision loss. Regular eye screening is essential for all those living with diabetes.
The Diabetes Eye Health guide was developed by the International Diabetes Federation and the Fred Hollows Foundation, and builds upon the ICO Guidelines for Diabetic Eye Care. This guide encourages and facilitates good diabetes management, early diagnosis and treatment of diabetic eye disease, as well encouraging integration and cooperation across the health system. The primary audience for this document is the broad suite of health professionals who work with people with diabetes.
The Diabetes Eye Health Guide was made possible with support from Bayer Pharma AG and Novartis Pharma AG.
