When Andres Enrique was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, we set out to learn everything about the condition. Unfortunately, we had to get most of our information from outside Nicaragua. We want to make Nicaragua more visible so that families receive up-to-date education on type 1 diabetes.
We are currently organising the first camp for children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes in Nicaragua and have set up the country’s first Whatsapp parent support group. We are convinced that promoting exchange between people with type 1 diabetes, their caregivers, communities, and global networks, provides psychological and emotional strength. It is something intangible, but which generates a great impact on treatment adherence.
It should be a human right to access free analogue insulin, blood glucose meters, test strips and glucagon to help reduce complications and improve the quality of life of people living with type 1 diabetes.
As Dr Elliott Joslin wrote, “Diabetes education is not a part of the treatment, it is the treatment.” I want to learn from the IDF Blue Circle Voices network to bring about positive change in Nicaragua.
