Renewing the fight: a call to action for diabetes and chronic kidney disease

Date and time: 13 Jul 2023, 14:00-15:15 (CEST)
Location: Online

Over 537 million people live with diabetes and over 850 million with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In recent decades, both conditions have seen a dramatic increase in cases. To address these growing health issues, IDF and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) have published a policy brief, “Renewing the fight: a call to action for diabetes and chronic kidney disease”. Healthcare professionals and diabetes advocates discussed recommendations targeted at policymakers for effectively preventing, managing and treating diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

To mark the launch of the policy brief, IDF and ISN hosted an online event to explore the necessary actions for implementing these recommendations, ultimately resulting in improved health outcomes for people with diabetes and CKDs. We heard shared experiences to better understand what living with these conditions means and how better policy can improve lives.

The expert line-up of panellists included:

  • Prof Akhtar Hussain, IDF President (Bangladesh/Norway)
  • Ms Anita Sabidi, IDF Blue Circle Voices member (Indonesia)
  • Dr Antonio Ceriello (Italy)
  • Prof Masaomi Nangaku, ISN President (Japan)
  • Dr Roberto Pecoits-Filho (Brazil)
  • Dr Shaifali Sandal, ISN Advocacy Working Group (Canada)
