International Diabetes Federation at 78th WHO World Health Assembly

On 19-27 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) held its 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva. The World Health Assembly is the WHO decision-making body that determines WHO policies.

IDF was present and co-hosted a side event – Digital health transformation in the global NCD response: A  call for unified approaches and scaled investment – with the World Diabetes Foundation. IDF President Prof Peter Schwarz and IDF Vice-President Dr Jackie Maalouf also participated as speakers in other side events that addressed key issues related to the care, management and prevention of diabetes and NCDs.

Several WHA agenda items were relevant for the diabetes community, including universal health coverage, climate change and preparations in the run-up to the 2025 UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs. IDF supported constituency statements on the following agenda items:

  • 13.1: Follow-up to the Political Declaration of the Third High-Level Meeting on NCDs
  • 13.3: Universal Health Coverage
  • 14: Health in the 2030 agenda for sustainable development
  • 18.3: Climate Change and Health.
