New International Diabetes Federation Technology and AI Working Group

19 June 2025

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has established a new working group on Technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in diabetes care, marking a key step towards integrating digital innovation into the global response to diabetes. The group was established by the new IDF Board that began its term at the IDF World Diabetes Congress 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Working Group will endeavour to develop the strategies and guidelines to incorporate digital tools and AI-driven solutions into diabetes care for better diabetes prevention, diagnosis, management and policy. This initiative responds to growing evidence on the potential of digital health to transform outcomes—if applied responsibly and equitably.

Over the past two decades, technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin pumps, mobile health platforms, and telemedicine have integrated diabetes care. AI and machine learning have added capabilities such as predictive analytics, risk classification and personalised clinical support. Despite these advances, access remains uneven, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where affordability, infrastructure and digital literacy continue to limit widespread use.

The working group will aim to ensure digital innovation reaches all communities while addressing ethical concerns, including data privacy, algorithm bias, and equitable deployment.

“We are entering a transformative era in healthcare, where technology and AI offer powerful tools to personalise and optimise diabetes care. This working group will help guide our global community in understanding and leveraging these tools effectively and equitably.” Professor Peter Schwarz, IDF President

The IDF Working Group on Technology and AI is chaired by Dr Amit Dey (India), and members include:

  • Dr Viral Shah (USA)
  • Dr Inge Van Boxelaer (Belgium)
  • Dr Klemen Dovc (Germany)
  • Dr Hossam Arafa Ghazi (Egypt)
  • Dr Juliana Chan (Hong Kong, China)
  • Dr Daphne Gardner (Singapore)

Operating under the guidance of the IDF Board, the group will engage with IDF Member Associations, academic institutions and other global stakeholders. Activities will include developing policy guidance, educational resources and position statements to support responsible innovation in diabetes care.
